iPhone Battery Repair

Apple quickly admitted that it had been quietly slowing down older phones to enhance their performance and to ensure that the phones didn’t shut down because the batteries didn’t have enough power. Soon after, Apple said that it would replace affected batteries so that the phones would be fixed.

The battery replacement program has been in effect for a few weeks, but their still some confusion.

Here’s an attempt to help clarify the situation.

Is my iPhone Part of the Battery Replacement Program?

If you have an iPhone 6 or newer you are eligible to receive a battery as part of the program.

If you have an iPhone 5s it seems as if you are out of luck. It wouldn’t hurt to head to an Apple Store and talk to one of the genius’s to see if there’s anything they can do.

How Much Will the New Battery Cost?

Apple normally charges $79 to install a new battery but under this program Apple will do it for $29.

How Long is the Battery Replacement Program?

The program will last until December of 2018.

What if I Have AppleCare?

AppleCare covers your iPhone for 2 years of hardware repair, so if you are within the coverage period, Apple will replace your iPhone battery for free.

How Do I Set Up Replacement?

Go to the Apple Support page, choose iPhone, then battery, power and charging. There you can chat with a service representative or schedule and appointment to bring it in to an Apple Store for repair.

Do I Need an Appointment?

Not really but since this program was just initiated Apple will probably be inundated with requests. Reserve your spot to avoid a long wait or wasted trip.

How Long Will it Take?

Apple should be able to complete the repair in about an hour, but it will depend on the work load at that particular Apple Store. ** If you need to replace and iPhone 6s Plus battery it won’t be available until late March or early April.

What Should I Do Before I Bring My iPhone For Battery Replacement?

Run a backup. Apple probably won’t need to reset your phone but you want to make sure your data won’t be lost.

What is Apple Doing to Prevent this in the Future?

As long as iPhones use rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, battery life will be an issue. Apple is promising to be more transparent going forward. As part of an iOS software update they will be adding new features to the battery tab in Settings that will provide a way to see the health of your battery. While it won’t fix the problem, it will let users know of potential issues before they happen.
