A New and Easy Way To Free Up Space in iOS 11

Are you looking for a quick and easy way to free up space on your iPhone and/or iPad? In iOS 11 Apple did just that! The suggested options can give more storage on your device, often immediately.

New Storage Menu

In the new iPhone/iPad storage menu located in the Settings app, Apple includes a “Recommendations” section giving you options like optimizing photos and videos to the iCloud Photo Library, or clearing the “Recently Deleted” album. You can also set it to automatically remove unused apps when a device is low on storage, while keeping your data and files intact.

You can do this with a flip of a toggle switch, eliminating the need to hunt around in the Settings app.

iPhone Storage

The Message app gives a few options, like deleting large attachments, conversations or just setting old content to be removed after a year. Later in the fall iOS 11 will be updated to allow the storing of your messages and attachments in the Cloud.

Offload App

It’s not exactly clear what criteria Apple is using to label an app as “unused”, from one that’s almost never opened. You don’t worry about that. If you choose to “Offload” an app you can always reinstall, which will automatically have the matching data restored. You lose nothing.

Other Updates

The other new iOS upgrades include a new Files app, new Control Center, Drag and Drop on the iPad and Person to Person Apple Pay transfers.

I’ve added a quick video below walking you through how this works. Please check it out and if you have any questions or comments shoot me a message and let me know how I can help.
